What is the most important information I should know about ammonium lactate?

Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.

Uses of AmLactin

  • It is used to treat dry, scaly skin.
  • It is used to treat itching caused by dry skin.

How is this medicine (AmLactin) best taken?

Use this medicine as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.

  • Do not take AmLactin by mouth. Use on your skin only. Keep out of your mouth, nose, and eyes (may burn).
  • Wash your hands before and after use. Do not wash your hands after use if putting this on your hand.
  • Clean affected part before use. Make sure to dry well.
  • Put a thin layer on the affected skin and rub in gently.
  • Do not put on open wounds, cuts, or irritated skin.
  • Shake well before use.

What do I do if I miss a dose?

  • Put on a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
  • If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
  • Do not put on 2 doses or extra doses.

What are some side effects that I need to call my doctor about right away?

WARNING/CAUTION: Even though it may be rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug. Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of the following signs or symptoms that may be related to a very bad side effect:

  • Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Very bad irritation where this medicine is used.

Usual Adult Dose for Ichthyosis

Shake well. Apply topically to the affected areas and rub in thoroughly. Use twice daily or as directed by a physician.

Ammonium lactate topical Pregnancy Warnings

Ammonium lactate lotion has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Ammonium lactate lotion should be given during pregnancy when need has been clearly established.

Ammonium lactate topical Breastfeeding Warnings

Although lactic acid is a normal constituent of blood and tissues, it is not known to what extent this drug affects normal lactic acid levels in human milk

There are no data on the excretion of ammonium lactate into human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution is recommended when administering ammonium lactate lotion to a nursing woman.
