What is Aquatab DM (dextromethorphan and guaifenesin)?

Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. It affects the signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex.

Guaifenesin is an expectorant. It helps loosen congestion in your chest and throat, making it easier to cough out through your mouth.

Dextromethorphan and guaifenesin is a combination medicine used to treat cough and chest congestion caused by the common cold, infections, or allergies.

Dextromethorphan will not treat a cough that is caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects of dextromethorphan have included drowsiness and dizziness. Adverse effects, which have occurred at higher doses, include excitation, mental confusion, and opioid like respiratory depression. In some cases of abuse, patients have experienced euphoria, hyperactivity, mania, and auditory and visual hallucinations.[Ref]

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have included nausea, vomiting and constipation.[Ref]

Dermatologic

Dermatologic side effects have included pruritus and rash.[Ref]

Hypersensitivity

Hypersensitivity side effects of dextromethorphan have included fixed-drug eruptions.[Ref]

Dextromethorphan-guaifenesin has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted on this combination product. There are no controlled data on this combination product in human pregnancy. Dextromethorphan-guaifenesin is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.
